Elon Musk has revealed that ‘eventually, all life on Earth will be destroyed by the sun’ and scientists have confirmed when exactly that could happen.
Researchers from NASA and Tōhō University in Japan have used supercomputers to work out the sun’s evolution.
According to their calculations, Earth will be uninhabitable by the year 1,000,002,021 after the sun grows too hot and bright, reducing oxygen levels.
Researchers also discovered that in around five billion years, the sun will enter a red giant phase, when it will run out of hydrogen fuel and expand dramatically – at which point, it will likely engulf Mercury, Venus and potentially Earth.
Speaking to Jesse Watters on Monday, Musk said: ‘Mars is life insurance for life collectively,’.
‘The sun is gradually expanding, and so we do at some point need to be a multi-planet civilization because Earth will be incinerated.’
NASA has previously warned that our sun will eventually run out of energy but that it is less than half way through its life, with another five billion years to go.
