Why the new American Pope has chosen the name Leo

A historic milestone was achieved today with the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago as pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. He is the first American to assume leadership of the Catholic Church. The 69-year-old was selected following only one day of voting by the College of Cardinals.

With white smoke ascending above the Sistine Chapel, the decision was affirmed. Although born in the United States, he was significantly influenced by his missionary endeavors in Peru.

Pope Leo is recognized for his modesty and support for the underprivileged and migrants, reflecting the principles of his predecessor, Pope Francis.

A companion characterized him as ‘extremely humble’ and perpetually willing to assist those in need. He selected the name Leo, paying homage to former popes such as Leo XIII.
