Mexico Files Lawsuit Against Google For ‘Gulf Of America’ Name Change On Maps

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum announced on May 9 that they would be filing a lawsuit against Google for the ‘Gulf of America’ name change on Maps.

Donald Trump created an executive order earlier this year to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America’.

Sheinbaum gathered press last week to share that she was going forward with the lawsuit against Google for the change: “The lawsuit has already been filed,” Sheinbaum added, “All we want is for the decree issued by the US government to be complied with.

“The US government only calls the portion of the US continental shelf the Gulf of America, not the entire gulf, because it wouldn’t have the authority to name the entire gulf.”

Google’s Vice President Cris Turner had previously reached out to Sheinbaum to explain that Google would not be reversing the changes made to the map.

On Thursday, the House of Represnetatives passed the bill which will bring the name change into law and mean federal agencies must update their maps.

Despite being pushed through, the bill is not expected to pass the 60-vote threshold in the Senate.
